We’re happy to announce Alfonso Sánchez Moya’s (VU Amsterdam & Universidad Complutense de Madrid) PhD defense, which will be held on Monday 26 November 2018 at 13:45 at the VU Amsterdam (De Boelelaan 1105, 1081 HV Amsterdam).
The thesis was co-supervised by Juana Marín Arrese and Alan Cienki.
The topic involves a corpus-assisted discourse approach to the analysis of entries on a public British online women’s forum. The research examines three sections of the forum and is devoted to distinguishing stages in which the women perceive their status. The findings reveal nuanced ways in which the contributors to the different sections of the forum differ in their use of language for framing themselves in three stages of self-perception: an abusive relationship, working to get out of such a relationship and/or living after abuse. The thesis makes a contribution to the developmental study of women’s abuse and the perception of themselves and others, especially male perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence. It also contributes to critical discourse studies with an explicit evaluation of combined theories and methods for comparative content analysis (quantitative and qualitative, including metaphor analysis) in the context of abused women’s perceptions.
All welcome, and our best wishes,
